Nikon D800E
Zeiss ZF.2 28mm f/2 Distagon T*

28/2 Distagon vs Voigtlander Color Skopar 28/2.8 SL II

This comparison is especially appropriate because it pits two current-model (late 2012) manual focus 28mm lenses with similar build quality and construction against each other; the lenses are targeted at very similar types of users: manual focus prime lens shooters.

The 580-gram Zeiss 28/2 Distagon is a substantially larger and heavier lens with 10 elements in 8 groups; it necessarily can be expected to be better corrected and a higher performer.

However, the Voigtlander 180-gram 28mm /2.8 pancake lens with only 7 elements in 6 groups is a full stop slower, and one might therefore hope that by giving up one stop it would approach the Zeiss 28/2. Alas, there are no optical miracles to be had with a much smaller size at 1/3 the weight and with three fewer elements, at least not at less than half the price of the Zeiss 28/2 Distagon.
