Zeiss Otus 28mm f/1.4 APO-Distagon

Vignetting for Zeiss Otus 28/1.4

Vignetting into the corners is a bit more than two stops at f/1.4, and two stops at frame edge. However, it is only about 5/4 stop at frame edge. Stopping down to f/2.8 reduces vignetting to less than a stop even in the extreme corners.

By f/4, frame illumination is almost uniform (on the order of 1/2 stop), with only a trace of darkening into the extreme corners; this is hardly noticeable even in uniform blue sky. This is about as low as one can expect in a 28mm lens.

Since sharpness is excellent even wide open, vignetting can be used as a sort of neutral density filter, for peripheral areas, e.g., bright white clouds or similar features places at edge or corner areas. Moreover, vignetting is a useful tool for visual emphasis (your author prefers significant wide-open vignetting for most shooting purposes).
