The results of this test were so surprisingly in favor of the Zeiss ZF 35mm Distagon that they seemed suspicious at first. Careful examination of the foreground area suggested that perhaps the Canon 35L was focused ever so slightly more to the front. However, the results are consistent across two trials (refocused each time) and two more trials taken at a greater distance. In addition, other field shooting (see Creek Scene) confirms the conclusions seen here; in real use the 35 Distagon offers crisp imagery not matched by the competition.
The Zeiss 35mm f/2 Distagon offers impressive image quality wide-open at f/2. This page compares it to Canon’s EF 35mm f/1.4L, considered one of Canon’s best. By that standard, the 35 Distagon is truly outstanding, as it easily outperforms the Canon 35/1.4L.
