Examples in White Mountains, Death Valley

These examples taken in the White Mountains of California and/or near northern Death Valley National Park.

Sculptured bristlecone

These beautiful old trees are eroded away; the dense resin-filled wood is extremely resistant to rot. So after living thousands of years, they’ll stand for hundreds of years more, and linger even longer.

Shot at f/2.2, the image quality if fantastic, even if the depth of field means that sharpness is strictly limited, and I focused by eye as well. The combination of color, contrast, sharpness and bokeh all work magic in this image.

I love shooting images like this, and it’s one reason I own both the 50/1.4 and 50/2, as well as (on Leica), the 50/0.95 Noctilux. Had I stopped down further, I doubt the image would have improved; I like the sharpness difference between the subject and the background.
