Bokeh

Bokeh, or the way a lens “draws” out-of-focus areas, is a highly-subjective area in which there is often disagreement. There are lenses with truly ugly bokeh, but in most cases, it’s like arguing whether chocolate ice cream is better than vanilla!

The desired out of focus rendering can depend very much on the subject matter; portraits might demand creamy-smooth rendition, but street and landscape shooters might prefer a harder, more precise rendering which yields an impression of greater life or action. It’s personal taste, and a good reason to not reject out of hand the idea of more than one lens of the same focal length.

For examples of what your finds pleasing, see the 100mm Makro-Planar examples page. Ditto for the 55/1.4 APO-Distagon and 135mm f/2 APO-Sonnar.
