Zeiss ZF.2 21mm f/2.8 Distagon T*

Distortion

Optical distortion should not be confused with perspective “distortion” at close range; this has nothing to do with the optics (and in truth it is not distortion at all). Rather, it is the “bulging nose” effect, e.g., for a portrait taken with a wide angle lens—that at close range: the inverse square law for size/distance. For an excellent tutorial on distortion se toothalker.org.

Additional discussion on wide-angle lens distortion can be found on the 18/3.5 Distagon page.

The ZF 21/2.8 Distagon shows prominent “wave” or “moustache” distortion. That ism barrel distortion (bowing out) in the central 2/3 area which reverses to become pincushion distortion (bowing in) into the corners. Distortion is one of those optical compromises as a tradeoff for others in the optical optimization.
