Apple’s performance claims scrutinized

As predicted in this blog’s January 11 entry, shining a bright light on Steve Jobs’ performance claims for the new Intel-based Macs reveals a less than honest approach in presenting them to the unsuspecting public.

Two articles have emerged which discuss this. Infoworld has a brief discussion on it, as does Henry Norr at Macintouch.com.   The criticism to be levelled here is not that the new Intel-based Macs aren’t faster (they are of course), but that Apple has been less than honest in its explanation of when one can expect performance gains.

Steve Jobs could have said These are dual-core machines, so on some tasks they’ll be radically faster, since it’s like having two computers in one—plus they also run at higher clock speeds than the previous machines.”.  Rather, he chose to quote SPEC numbers, and did not make it explicit that Apple used multithreaded benchmarks.  Real-world performance is what matters when buying a computer, and much of real-world performance is single-threaded (making use of only one core).  Technically astute users who had time on their hands could dig around and figure it out, but not 99% of the people hearing his message.

Those who already intend to purchase a new laptop or iMac should go ahead and get the new models—you will likely be pleased.  But if you’re on the fence, don’t spend a lot of money exchanging a perfectly good model for a newer one that might perform little better than the old one—wait until you see performance numbers for the applications that matter to you.   And do keep in mind that all of your non-Apple software will run in emulation mode with Rosetta, and thus might perform more poorly than on the “slower” non-Intel machines until you upgrade to Intel-based versions of your software ($$).
