Schneider PC-TS Makro-Symmar 90mm f/4.5 HM Tilt/Shift Lens for Canon/Nikon/Sony/Pentax K

Just arrived for testing is the Schneider PC TS 90mm f/4.5 tilt/shift lens for Nikon and Canon and Sony and Pentax K (interchangeable rear mounts). I will be testing the 90/4.5 on the Nikon D3x.

The Schneider PC TS Makro-Symmar 90 mm f/4.5 Lens gives you the same types of controls used by large format cameras to control perspective, but for your Nikon camera. There's both a parallel shift to reduce or eliminate converging lines or perspective distortion ("keystone correction") and a swinging or tilting of the lens according to Scheimpflug's rule to better utilize depth of field (DOF) without an increase in diffraction from stopping down the aperture further and reducing sharpness.

Parallel shift and lens swing or tilt can be carried out independently of one another in any desired direction (vertically, horizontally or obliquely) thanks to separate rotary mounts. This 90 mm f/4.5 Makro-Symmar lens combines exceptional reproduction quality with a large 90mm image circle and excellent adjustability. The exceptionally large image circles allow for full tilt and shift movements at any position in the lens rotation with no possibility of vignetting.

- Perspective Control, Tilt & Shift lens for Nikon cameras

- 12 mm shift range,

- 8 degree tilt range with an image circle diameter of 79.2 mm at infinity

The image circle of 90mm enormous compared to the image circle of Nikon and Canon tilt/shift lenses, which typically is around 64mm. Even Schneider’s aging 28mm f/2.8 PC-Super-Angulon only has an image circle of 63mm. The extended image circle should result in very high quality, even if full shift and tilt are used in combination. I shall certainly be probing the quality limits in my review in DAP.

The manual supplied with the lens is the best by far that I have ever seen supplied with a tilt/shift lens. Kudos to Schneider for supplying a useful manual, since not everyone understands how such a lens can and should be used (see my existing reviews of Canon and Nikon and Schneider tilt/shift lenses in DAP).

LensRentals.com has the Schneider PC-TS 50mm f/2.8 on the way to me for testing.
