Just arrived today from Zeiss is my review sample of the Zeiss ZE 25mm f/2 Distagon (Canon EF mount, also available in Nikon mount).
In one word, WOW!
The 25/2 is a lens with exceptional imaging quality, and I mean exceptional.
Color purity and color saturation are outstanding. When combined with the lens contrast, the effect is stunning. Sharpness is razor-like.
There is little doubt in my mind that the 25/2 Distagon is destined to become my most-favored wide angle lens yet— for the combination of it’s optical quality, its size and weight and form factor, its highly versatile 25mm focal length come together in a way that is exceptional. I have several large drawers full of lenses, so that’s saying something.
I shot ad-hoc this afternoon for about 20 minutes, concentrating on using aperture f/2 at close range, a favorite approach of mine. Handling was superb— I really liked using the 25/2 Distagon with its silky smooth focus. It’s a perfect match for the Canon 5D Mark II.
Sample images— high res versions coming soon in my Guide to Zeiss. And of course I’ll be focusing my attention on this lens over the next few weeks— stay tuned.
The 25/2 Distagon is expected to be available in December— watch this blog for updates.
