Canon 60Da for Astrophotography

Spectral transmission matters for astrophotography, and to this end, the new Canon 60Da was recently announced by Canon is available for pre-order at B&H Photo.

The 60Da uses a modified glass over the sensor which transmits wavelengths of interest to astrophotographers to be transmitted, as opposed to blocked.

Increased Infrared (IR) Sensitivity for Astrophotography — with long exposures and proper noise management most modern low-noise DSLR cameras will do the job of adequately capturing objects such as star clusters, blue reflection nebulae, and galaxies. The problem with most cameras is that they almost always utilize a low-pass, long-wavelength filter that makes them poor at recording the light of a difficult-to-render red emission nebula

Luckily, for those astrophotographers who seek to capture the elusive red emission nebulae, there is a solution to this problem: the Canon EOS 60Da--which has been specifically redesigned with a modified filter that provides increased infrared (IR) sensitivity for astrophotography allowing crisp, clear images of red, diffuse nebulae. This IR cut filter is modified to achieve a hydrogen-alpha (Hα) light (656nm) transparency approximately three times higher than the EOS 60D camera. Made for astrophotography right out of the box, there is no need to modify the camera or filter as is required with other DSLR cameras.
