Reader Asks: Fujifilm X Viability

Reader Marcel writes:

A quick question for you regarding something you said in your recent post regarding Fujifilm X mount, your parenthetical “assuming Fujifilm X remains viable”.

This is a concern for me presently as I am seriously considering picking up an X-E1 with the 18 and 60 now that they're on sale, but I have doubts about Fuji's future. I have been using an X100 on loan for the last few weeks and, in spite of its significant shortcomings, I am truly enjoying shooting with it as my small-the-time-carry camera.

However, I must confess that I may mostly be looking for a body to attach to the back of my future Touit lenses. I've nearly fully converted to Zeiss lenses for use with my D800e after reading Guide to Zeiss and subsequently experiencing the results. They mate very well with my style of shooting.

I have a very strong dislike for both the NEX6 and 7 from a handling perspective, but I might consider one as an option instead of the X-E1 if X mount is unlikely to survive. Do you have any recommendations?

DIGLLOYD: None of the smaller cameras have it all right; they all have significant drawbacks. I have the same negative reaction to NEX but the sensor in the NEX-7 is fabulous for its color, dynamic range and resolution. And bottom line for me is that 24 megapixels free of oddball digital artifacts is a heck of a lot more than 16 megapixels with artifacts (as in Fujifilm X). I bought the X-E1 yesterday for strict business reasons, not a desire to own one. Certain things about it drive me crazy, but I’ve already discussed those in my review.

The market is under severe pressure, and Fujifilm seems to be committed, but one wonders why there is no X-Pro2 with a 24 megapixel sensor yet (probably simple: these things take time). And while I liked 30-50% off on lenses, it says that Fujifilm is having serious trouble moving product to have to discount that deeply (and if I were an existing customer, I’d be really pissed at seeing my investment cut in half, e.g., resale value). Or it could mean they have decided to go for market share by eating large losses (it seems unlikely that such prices can be profitable). Either way, it says “extreme pressure”. How will that pan out? I don’t know. Probably just the same selling issues that are causing every vendor (except Leica!) to discount, and truth be told Sony is discounting and delaying product introductions. So probably it means nothing except bad judgment (deep discounting devalues a brand).

Worth noting is that Zeiss felt that it was worth supporting Fuji X with the Zeiss Touit line, so this says something about whatever discussions had to happen.

Personally I think it is a good time or a bad time to buy: good because big discounts apply (Sony NEX is nicely discounted also), but poor because all these cameras clearly have another step to make in ergonomics and a moderate step in resolution. Buying a kit as I did it’s easy: the body is just an accessory for now, the lenses are keepers.
