Reader Wants to Return to Photography after Hiatus, Digital This Time

Consulting client Chris R writes:

About 12 years ago I reengaged my passion for photography and entered the world of film-free and chemical-less photography. I made great progress in my free time coming up to speed and making the jump to digital. However, I have had to put most of the work aside over the past 5 years as I actively sold the company. As a result, my computer, a 10 year old Pentium PC is dated and should have been replaced 2 times over. I have a dual monitor set up with a just dead Sony Artisan monitor but am considering the 30" NEC (to be discussed).

I currently work with relatively large files as I use a Canon 1DS Mark III and stitch images as I like to print rather large. It's not uncommon for a TIFF file to run +800MB and I need more speed. I print small too but usually prefer images 30" x 40" up to 40" x 70". I am considering a switch to medium format but need to up grade my computer as a first priority.

I would also be interested in your insights on medium format (IQ260?) and also printers (currently use an Epson 9800 but also dated). Also, your suggestions for other (non Adobe) helpful workflow software you'd recommend. I'm just out of the loop. Adobe and Google have seemed to have bought up many of the companies. As an example, I used to use Raw Shooter over the early versions of Adobe Raw and also third party plug ins for sharpening etc.

DIGLLOYD: Life’s activities and enjoyments often tend to run cycles.

My consulting services can help pull together your questions for camera and lens choices, computing setup, backup and so on. I try to serve my clients in two key ways: (1) steering them towards the best gear for their particular goals, and (2) keeping the cost down by avoiding unnecessary expenses that won’t serve their goals any better.
