B&H Photo has the 16-megapixel Pentax K5 IIs for $699. It is the model prior to the Pentax K3. Both are very well built cameras.
The K5 IIs has some unusual features for a DSLR, including no anti-aliasing filter an an in-body shake reduction feature, very handy indeed.
Based on my testing using the Sigma SD1 Merrill, the all-around lens I’d put on it would be the new Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DG HSM. But see also my reviews of the Pentax HD Limited lenses.
