Fujifilm GF 110mm f/2 R LM WR Aperture Series: Face In Boulder (worst lens I have ever seen)

See my Fujifilm GFX wish list.

Update 22 July 2017: see the same scene shot with a good sample.

...

Shooting last night, I observed extreme smearing when trying to focus the Fujifilm GF 110mm f/2, making it virtually impossible to determine best focus, and autofocus could do no better.

This unthinkable sample of the about $2799 Fujifilm GF 110mm f/2 R LM WR somehow made it out of the garbage bin, calling into question the quality control at Fujifilm (does it exist?); the lens is literally unusable garbage, optically speaking.

This copy of the Fujifilm GF 110mm f/2 R WR is by far the worst “bad sample” I have ever seen in a decade of testing. It is insanely bad—even at f/13 it cannot make a sharp image outside the central 1/2 of the frame. One reader sent me a few raw files using his 110mm f/2, and they are razor sharp at f/2. So clearly this lens I received is damaged.

The 110mm f/2 has that clunk-clunk linear focusing motor like the 120/4 (when power is off something clunks around internally). My guess is a box was dropped off the truck somewhere and that loose internal part slammed around. If so, such a design probably won't stay sharp with use over time with parts like that clunking around.

This aperture series is useful only in showing just how bad a lens can be.

Fujifilm GF 110mm f/2 Aperture Series: Face in Boulder (Extreme Bad Sample)

Includes images up to full resolution from f/2 through f/13.

I’ve requested a replacement GF 110mm f/2, but how long that will take I do not know.

While I am very unhappy about having my entire shoot with the GF 110/2 as a total loss, at least it goes no further than one wasted evening. I also shot the GF 23mm f/4 and I’m hoping that it has no issues.
