Zeiss Milvus 35mm f/1.4 Distagon: Excellent for Focus Stacking

Get Zeiss Milvus at B&H Photo.

The Zeiss Milvus 35mm f/1.4 Distagon has outstanding color correction, which along with its superb sharpness make it a very fine lens for focus stack, as was done below (3 frame stack).

If you have not visited Whitney Portal (trailhead to the Mt Whitney trail), I strongly suggest a visit even if only for a short hike up the lower part of the trail and/or the awesome drive to the portal. If nothing else, take a picnic lunch under the stately pines with a special quiet church-like feel.

The canyon is spectacular, and while I’ve been there four times, it has been a long time and my jaw dropped—I had forgotten both the amazing approach and the canyon-wow. Just drive up Whitney Portal road from Lone Pine, CA, right off Hwy 395. A permit is required to go past Lone Pine Lake, but that’s plenty of hiking for many people anyway.

The grueling trek to the summit is tough; one hiker started at midnight and was only getting down at 4 PM. As for myself, 4 AM and down by 5 PM is more to my liking, using the steep and shorter mountaineer’s route—24 miles of trail is just to long via the main route, IMO.

Control of aberrations and color errors is critical to scenes like this.
