Shootout: Zeiss Otus 85mm f/1.4 APO-Planar vs Nikon 85mm f/1.4G: Boreal Ski Slope at Night

See my Zeiss DSLR lens wish list and get Zeiss Milvus at B&H Photo.

This series is a distance evaluation comparing the about $4190 Zeiss Otus 85mm f/1.4 APO-Planar to the about $1596 Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G.

Lighting in this scene is exceptionally challenging, with extreme brightness lights together with deep shadows and areas of snow with high brightness. As well, the special distribution is peculiar (artificial lights), a reality few “lab tests” ever account for. In short, the lighting is unforgiving in terms of flare control, and flare control over an oddball spectrum.

Zeiss Otus 85mm f/1.4 APO-Planar Aperture Series vs Nikon 85/1.4G: Boreal Ski Slope at Night (Nikon D850)

Includes images from f/1.4 through f/11 at up to full camera resolution, with commentary and large crops.

Night shooters, take note.
