Sony A1 Firmware Update
Good timing for me. My Sony A1 arrives today.
FOR SALE: my Sony A7R IV, which was hardly used as of 8 weeks ago. Total shutter count around 2000 frames. This is the brand-new A7R IV I received as a replacement late last year. It saw almost no use until May/June. Will include Really Right Stuff L-Bracket. $2550/best offer.
Sony still uses the world’s worst approach to camera firmware updates, with a de-facto “root kit” software program (system extension) for your computer, just to update the camera. Horrible security hygiene—see Reader Comment: Sony Firmware Update Methodology Worst Out There, Plus Potential Security Risk. I always run it on a old spare laptop, just in case. That’s a good approach. A co-worker's computer would be even better!
Adding insult to injury, to update the camera, you have to do a 698MB download. Not exactly “field friendly”.

When I tested the A1 before, it was already rock solid. Disappointing to not see Sony aggressively pursue new features, like support for focus stepping for focus stacking. I’d bet that Sony could do it way better than Fujifilm, if for no other reason that far superior AF lens motors.
