Voigtlander FE 35mm f/2 APO-Lanthar Aperture Series: White Tops of White Mountains
I’ve moderated my view of the central rearward focus shift of the Voigtlander FE 35mm f/2 APO-Lanthar somewhat. It is still a PITA versus not having focus shift, with risks of inferior sharpness when stopped down, as shown in Focus Shift in Landscapes, Patriarch Grove. But at f/2 and f/2.8 it offers superior sharpness to alternatives such as the Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM and if (if and only if) care is taken on focus placement it is hard to beat at f/4 and f/5.6.
This aperture series from f/2 through f/5.6 looks at sharpness across the field and near to far with the Voigtlander 35mm f/2 APO-Lanthar Aspherical, using a choice of focus that delivers optimal sharpness at f/5.6. It is thus a practical example of how to focus the lens for best sharpness for landscapes like this.
