Calling Out Some Top Lenses and Cameras

The end of the tax year is coming, so get your gear soon to be assured of writing it off as a Section 179 business expense for 2021; supply chain issues might make it difficult to receive gear by end of year. Gear must be in service by end of year to qualify; consult a tax pro for more information.

Medium format
See Ease Into Medium Format with the Fujifilm GFX-50R for just $2999. But if you can afford it, go straight to the Fujifilm GFX100S. You might want a 35mm-format system also however, since the medium format route is clunky by comparison.
Sony
Medium format aside, let’s start with Sony, the most popular mirrorless platform, and for good reason. Sony has by far the widest and most diverse lens selection for mirrorless cameras.
My #1 standout pick for Sony is the Sony FE 12-24mm f/2.8 GM, which at least matches and often dramatically outperforms every prime lens in its zoom range. If you like "wide", this is the lens for you. Also superb are the 14/1.8, 24/1.4, 35/1.4, 135/1.8, 50/1.2, 90/2.8. The 100/2.8 STF offers uniquely smooth bokeh, so get that for portraits. The 35/1.4 is a terrific all-arounder.
Short of the superlative Sony A1, the Sony A7R IVa is a deal at $500 off, and an ideal landscape camera that might be the best value among all the mirrorless cameras. I would rate it and the Nikon Z7 II and Canon EOS R5 as comparable, but differing in ergonomics and features that might or might not matter to you.
Sony has many impressive standouts, and every one of the lenses below is a strong performer, if not superb. Through 2022-01-02, Sony has a “buy 2 more and receive rebate up to $200 per lens purchased”.
Nikon mirrorless
The Nikon D850 DSLR need not be abandonded in favor of mirrorless—it is still competitive for landscapes and similar, and makes great images with Zeiss Milvus and Zeiss Otus lenses. If you have one, stick with it unless there is some compelling feature in mirrorless.
Nikon’s mirrorless system is outstanding, the camera ergonomics are top-notch, and the f/2.8 zooms are wonderful.
Canon mirrorless
Canon’s mirrorless system is outstanding too, though the Canon EOS R5 is notably more expensive than the Sony A7R IVa, which gives some brief pause. And for ultra wide shooters, 12-24mm from Sony is unbeatable. Still, I have no general reservations about Canon mirrorless. Plus, the Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L and Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L are superb reasons to buy the system.
Computer gear
Lots of good stuff out there, and thanks for buying through OWC/macsales.com. Isn’t it amazing that you can get 18TB for only $349? Add the OWC MERCURY ELITE PRO enclosure, plug it in, and storage problems are a thing of the past. Of course, you’ll want more than one (for backups), and my favorite of all of them for big capacity is the OWC Thunderbay 4 or OWC Thunderbay 8.
