Looking for a fast, capacious, and super-quiet storage solution for large photography or video work?
I just sent back the OWC Accelsior 8M2, after using it for over two months. Offering SSD performance double that of any SSD offered by Apple (quadruple for most Macs), it performed flawlessly the entire time.
I tested the 32TB model, but it goes up to a whopping 64TB. Pricey, but if you have the need, nothing else will do—this is a professional product that videographers love. Price out of range (it is for me!)... hard drive based solutions are still very fast, and a lot less expensive.
Performance is/was insanely fast, and at a level that supports ultra high-end 8K video processing, data analysis, etc. Indeed, it is so fast that you can just forget about that as a factor.
The speed so superlative that it can be forgotten about, what the Accelsior 8M2 really offers then is huge capacity for big jobs that require speed—up to 64TB in a single-slot card!
No Mac Pro? House the Accelsior in an external PCIe enclosure like the OWC Helios S3. However, it will run at the limits of the Thunderbolt bus speed and therefore I recommend the OWC Thunderblade instead for users with other Macs and the Thunderblade is highly portable too.
