At last I have a strong sample of the Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II. The first two duds have gone back.
This sample shows symmetry over the range with no obvious issues, similar to Sample #3 loaned to me by a reader. I can proceed with ad-hoc shooting. But first, I will show 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 70mm aperture series of “deck and roof” shot using pixel shift, which serve to show exactly what the limits are of the optics.
The 24mm to 50mm range is cleary the strong end of the zoom. But while I am not impressed with the performance at the tele end, it should prove quite satisfactory for many purposes, though it is a serious compromise versus a lens like the Voigtlander FE 65mm f/2 Macro APO-Lanthar.
