Fujifilm Medium Format: Fujifilm GF 35-70mm the Very Best Lens to have, Shockingly Low price

re: Fujifilm Medium Format eg Fujifilm GFX100S: What’s Missing in Lenses

re: Fujifilm Medium Format: Deep Discounts, Which Lenses to Get?

Fujifilm GF 35-70mm f/4.5-5.6

The Fujifilm GF 35-70mm f/4.5-5.6 is not only the best medium format lens value on the market today, I prefer it to all the prime lenses in its range on a performance basis, and I’ve shown why in my Fujifilm medium format reviews.

About $500 Fujifilm GF 35-70mm f/4.5-5.6.

Roy P writes:

I wanted to test my Fujifilm lenses a little more before the light changed, so I took a few more test shots, this time concentrating on the 50mm focal length, so I could include my Fuji 50/3.5 also in the mix.  So all these comments are relative to the 50mm focal length.

Surprise #1:  It was worth checking my second copy of the 35-70, which turned out to be even better at the extreme edges than copy #1 I spoke to you about this morning. Marginal, but definitely noticeable micro contrast improvements (e.g., texture on blank white wall, sharper line edge definition on license plate numbers).  On the white wall, it would be hard to say the lighting was exactly identical, but there is no question the license plate looks ever so slightly nicer.  So Copy #2 becomes the keeper.

Surprise #2: Both the 35-70 actually seem slightly better at the edges than my 50/3.5 prime at f/5.6 and f/8.  Need to study this more, but from what I’ve seen so far, I can’t say the 35-70 is inferior to the 50/3.5 prime at f/5.6 and f/8.  Center sharpness looks identical.

Surprise #3: Both copies of the 35-70 seem slightly better than my 45-70, at f/5.6 and f/8 at the edges.  Center sharpness looks identical.

Surprise #4: My 32-64 is the worst GF lens I have, at least for the 50mm focal length.  Really hideous.  Inferior center sharpness that quickly rolls over away from center at both f/5.6 and f/8.  What is really a head-scratcher with the 32-64 f/4 is, as I’m crawling through the image looking at other areas, suddenly this plant pops up looking very sharp some 15 feet in front of my focus target.  It has a serious focus shift problem.  Objectively speaking, it is probably optically the better lens, but to use it effectively I would have to become a student of this lens to get it to optimally focus, and that is too much effort.

Net-net, my 35-70 Copy #1 was already good, and it looks like my Copy #2 is even better, so is the keeper.  Looks like my 32-64 needs a promotion as “Source of Funds”.

The GF 35-70mm is a no brainer – how can anyone go wrong with this for $500? Looks like it was lost below the radar until you discovered it!

DIGLLOYD: how can anyone go wrong with it for $1500 (triple its current price)? Seriously: you can skip 3 or 4 prime lenses and do just as well for 1/10 the price.

Amazingly, a $500 kit lens satisfies me more than any lens in its range that I’ve tried, and outperforms the competition in sharpness and freedom from focus shift to boot.

The Fujifilm GF 35-70mm f/4.5-5.6 shows its stunning capabilities by not only holding its own or beating-off all of Fujifilm’s prime lenses in its range, but it matches or beats the Hasselblad XCD 55mm f/2.5 V and matches or beats the Hasselblad XCD 38mm f/2.5 V each time I compare them.

Currently about $500 Fujifilm GF 35-70mm f/4.5-5.6.

It would be foolish not to get the 35-70 at $999 but crazy to not pick it up at just $500. There has never been a better time to get into medium format: for as little as $3700 with lens you are good to go!

Note: the 35-70 is out of stock as I write this, but the bundle with the GFX 50S II is in stock.
