Reader Comment: Nikon Mirrorless, Nikon NIKKOR Z Lenses, Voigtlander Lenses for Nikon Mirrorless

re: Confusticating Choice: Sony A7R V with Pixel Shift vs Fujifilm GFX100S

Michael Erlewine writes:

What has changed for me is the advent of the Nikon Z Series S lenses. These are some of the finest lenses I have ever used and I have over 100 lenses, many of the best APO lenses out there.

The rumor is that we will see a Nikon Medium-Format lens this year, which means I can use my Nikon S lenses with that camera.

When I first go into Nikon Mirrorless, I promised myself I would NOT buy new lenses, but just use the many Nikon and Nikon-usable lenses I already have.

Well, that and a ticket will get me a ride on the bus. I fell in love with the “S” series lenses and now have almost all of them except the large telephotos, since I don’t do much of that. I do have the 100mm-400mm “S” lens and, of course, the 70mm-200 “S”.  And the two teleconverters from Nikon for the “S” lenses are remarkably good and the 1.4X in particular. The “S” series 105 MC lens is a superb velvety and sharp lens. I use it all the time.

As you mention, I have used the Voigtlander 65mm for years, and have both the Sony version (with adapter) and the new Z series Voigtlander. And while it is super sharp, I find it is often too sharp for what I need and I reach for the 105mm “S” TC lens instead.

I feel that if the Nikon Medium Format camera arrives, that and the “S” lenses are all that I need. And if Nikon should come out with pixel-shift, that would be Heaven.

DIGLLOYD: my main issue with Nikon is the failure to (a) go beyond ~45 megapixels, (b) no pixel shift or high-res mode. Does it matter... not that much since 60MP is little different than 45MP in reality. And Nikon does have an excellent focus stacking support. Furthermore, a “dinosaur” like the Nikon D850 has the same 45MP resolution but is free of any PDAF banding issues of the Z7 II or Z9. So in some ways, Nikon is little evolved or even devolved from the technology of 2017; for landscape it is always better to NOT have a PDAF sensor.

I want to take a fresh look at Nikon Nikkor S lenses I have not yet covered—it’s been too long*. Kid of a bummer though that after ~5 years there has been no change in sensor resolution. I’d rather not carry the Nikon Z9 around (weight, bulk), and it does not seem to offer any value over the Nikon Z7 II for landscape and similar... and the Z7 II is a quite old platform at this point.

I agree that the Nikon mirrorless lenses as a group are outstanding with very nice qualities, though too reliant on distortion correction in some cases—and that’s troublesome for landscape.

The Voigtlander APO lenses for Nikon Z are very attractively priced. The Voigtlander Z 35mm f/2 APO, Voigtlander Z 50mm f/2 APO, Voigtlander Z 65mm f/2 APO are all superb.

* An energy powerhouse until April 2020, Long COVID or its after math (EBV + thyroid disease) has taken nearly 3 years out of my life, but I have some degree of energy back, albeit fractional and unpredictable.
