iPhone 6s Plus per-pixel quality (still or panorama) is of a low order, such that a 1.5X to 2X linear reduction is required for what a 35mm full-frame conventional camera can do in one pixel, that is: 4 pixels becoming one pixel (2X reduction) e.g., an 8 megapixel image frequently really only has 2 megapixels of useful detail as compared to a very high quality In the best case this rises to no more than 5 megapixels, and that’s a stretch unless one has low quality standards and an untrained eye for good pixel quality. Which of course would draw a blank stare from most iPhone users!
This page discusses a process for sharpening and downsampling iPhone 6s Plus panoramas. This process relies on the fact that panoramas have many more pixels than still photo images. Examining many field images, it is clear that iPhone 6s Plus panoramas at full resolution have nothing to offer over 1.5X to 2X linear reductions. The downsampling process improves per-pixel quality substantially to very good levels, and loses no sharpness.
