Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II
Panasonic/Leica 15/1.7 DG Summilux

HighRes Sensor Shift Mode vs Standard Resolution, RESOLUTION (Mining Museum)

The Olympus OMD E-M5 Mark II produces 9216 X 6912 images (63.7MP) from 105MB raw files when shot in its hi-res sensor shift mode (those dimensions are 2X linear multiples of its 4608 X 3456 native resolution). The EM5 Mark II produces 40 megapixel JPEG images simultaneously (SLF + Raw). When shooting in hi-res mode SLF+RAW format, the EM5M2 produces three files:

The huge ORF file has nowhere near the detail its 64 megapixels imply, so the question is how much it really offers over the standard resolution file. The Olympus position is that it offers up to about 40 megapixels of detail under ideal conditions; hence the 40MP JPEG that is output. This is an optimistic upper bound; the true gains depend on lens performance, focus accuracy and depth of field, losses from diffraction, etc. Even if resolution gains are modest, there can be benefits to oversampling in that digital artifacts are diminished.
