Sigma DP-1 Merrill

Exposure Bracketing Sequence

Here we explore the camera dynamic range and exposure placement, a subject which is terribly confusing when using the Sigma Photo Pro software, and in trying to relate the camera histogram to the Photoshop histogram to the Sigma Photo Pro histogram.

The Sigma DP1 Merrill was set to use the AdobeRGB color space , but the JPEGs it generates are always tagged with the sRGB color space, so they presumably are sRGB. This is an apparent camera bug.

Analysis of JPEGs and their histograms

With the JPEG exposures, the white sink begins to be lost with the 1/125 sec exposure, with the 1/160 second exposure just beginning to lose a bit of the brightest whites.

Contrary to the DP1 Merrill histogram and the JPEG losses, the X3F file at 1/80 second actually retains all highlight detail, as shown further below in RAW to the rescue.
