Conclusions

Image resolution of the Sigma DP-2 is outstanding. Its unique sensor avoids the demosaicing artifacts of conventional Bayer-pattern sensors, and this shows in its exquisite rendition of fine detail.

Color rendition generally requires some work, with the default rendition rather desaturated and flat-looking; it does not offer the lifelike feel of today’s newest-sensor DSLRs and others like the Olympus E-P1. Think of it as akin a different film emulsion. However, judicious choice of white balance, contrast and exposure can produce very pleasing results nonetheless.

The built-in fixed lens is a strong performer by f/5.6, and very good at wider apertures. Vignetting and distortion are well controlled.

Black and white

I explored black and white conversions briefly. My impression is that the black and white results are superb; the outstanding resolution of the X3 sensor delivers amazingly detailed and clean results. Anyone looking for really high quality black and white images in a compact package should take a good look at the DP-2, starting by experimenting with some of the RAW files on the Examples page.
