Sony FE 12-24mm f/4 G

Imaging Performance @ 24mm, Single Frame vs Stacked: Downed Tree, Last Kiss of Sunlight

This 3-frame focus stack compares with a single frame at f/11. The difference in total sharpness is remarkable, especially since f/11 at 24mm might be expected to have good depth of field. As the single frame shows, no single frame is up to the job for an image like this.

Focus stacking helps overcome three issues:

The Sony 12-24mm f/4 G used for this stack has a symmetry issue, with the right side generally unsharp with its focus thrown to the distance (including “beyond infinity” if focused to the far distance). Such asymmetries are very common, and many Sony lenses that I have tested have shown them—frustrating.
