Sony A7R II
Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM

Aperture Series @30mm: Rushing Water Loop

Near the short end of the zoom range at 30mm, this scene looks for sharpness across the frame and near to far, and finds some interesting behaviors.

Rushing Water Loop

Adobe Camera Raw 9.5 (585). View ACR Settings. Camera Profile = Camera Standard. Chromatic aberration is corrected via an embedded profile, enforced by ACR. Aperture f/9 and f/13 were sharpened to counteract diffraction.

Wide open sharpness is modest, the 24-70/2.8 GM seemingly designed for good definition overall but with no particularly sharp detail anywhere at f/2.8—so much so that it is difficult to say exactly where best focus is to be found! This is not a bitingly sharp lens wide open, not even in the center! It seems that the 24-70/2.8 GM is intentionally aberrated for a deep zone of moderately well defined detail (at f/2.8), perhaps intended for pleasing bokeh and balancing of aberrations. It also appears that there is a general forward-arcing field curvature that initiates only about 1/3 out from center, a supposition supported by another completely different scene at closer range. But stopped down to f/4.5, things pick up remarkably with micro contrast becoming much stronger. While difficult to be sure, there may also be a peripheral forward focus shift involved.
