Shootout vs Zeiss Batis 85mm f/1.8 (Dolls, A7R II)

This close-range scene pits the Sony 85mm f/1.4 GM against the Zeiss Batis 85mm f/1.8 Sonnar. The shooting distance is roughly equivalent in reproduction ratio to a tight head and shoulders portrait, thus it is highly relevant to real-world usage.

Close-range performance is one area where many lens designs are compromised. The Sony 85mm f/1.4 GM declines significantly in performance at close range which is easily at 12.5X magnified Live View, or by shooting a few images at close range. So how does it fare against the Zeiss Batis?

Field of View

The camera remained in a locked down fixed position. Since the entrance pupil position is different between lenses (and the actual focal length almost certainly differs also), there is an unavoidable perspective difference in this comparison.
