Sensor Image Stabilization at 1/8 Sec at Night, Self Timer Handheld

The EFC shutter (electronic first curtain) feature was enabled, for zero vibration from the camera shutter.

No matter how smoothly operated, pressing the shutter release is a stability concern; even the smoothest press could easily displace the camera far more than the size of a pixel (~6 microns on the A7 II).

An intriguing question arises: could use of the self timer improve the odds? That is, by separating the shutter press from exposure, might not the user be able to hold the camera steadier and raise the hit rate? By virtue of not introducing a source of instability with the shutter press.

A key operational feature is whether Live View is maintained during the interval after pressing the shutter release and before the exposure is taken. With a DSLR this is problematic if one wants mirror vibration eliminated: the mirror has to go up, thus blacking out the viewfinder as soon as the release is pressed. But the A7 II maintains full Live View display after the self timer starts, and until the exposure is made. Thus the stability of the camera is purely a function of the steadiness of the photographer, with no shutter press disruption to that stability. It seems promising.
