Zeiss Batis 85mm f/1.8 Sonnar

MTF for Zeiss Batis 85/1.8 Sonnar

The MTF chart shows excellent micro contrast wide open at f/1.8 with highly uniform sharpness corner to corner at all apertures. Overall contrast is superb wide open, even into the corners.

Since the MTF chart represents raw optical performance but the 3% pincushion distortion is flagged as required and that degrades micro contrast, the MTF chart is somewhat misleading as peak performance can never be as good as claimed when distortion is corrected.

Peak performance is reached at center by f/2.8, but the variation (wave inflection) across the field looks to be a mild field curvature; stopping down a bit more delivers outstanding micro contrast at f/5.6, far exceeding most lenses. As perspective, this performance is no less good than the very best Leica M lenses and better than nearly all of them. Minor astigmatism is present.
