Zeiss Loxia 35mm f/2 Biogon

Loxia 35/2 Flare

For all image-forming light, the Loxia 35mm f/2 Biogon offers outstanding overall contrast, at least from f/2.8 on down. But In the field, the one thing that must be avoided is direct sunlight which grazes the front element yet is not light forming part of the image.

Example

Virtually every lens will have issues similar to that shown here, with the sun right at frame edge.

Here, the sun was just above the edge of the frame, as close as it could be without actually including it. Multiple attempts were needed to make an image free of fingers (a hand was used to shade the lens).

The image was shot with the lens hood attached, which is irrelevant to this type of veiling flare behavior since the front lens element is grazed in its entirety by the sun. Even a rectangular lens hood would likely not avail. And this particular example is a worst case example because the background is so dark. Even a Zeiss Otus will show a trace of veiling flare under such conditions, and the Otii are the very best.
