The Canon 200-400mm f/4L IS (about $11799) is a versatile super-telephoto zoom lens with a built-in 1.4X extender, so it is more properly called a 200-400mm X 1.4X zoom; the extender applies against the entire zoom range. Image quality is likely to be best when the extender is applied to extend the range, hence one might call it a 200-400mm + 400-560mm zoom. To go beyond 400mm, one would set the lens to ~280mm and then flip in the 1.4X extender.
The convenience of having the 1.4X extender built-in is a remarkable thing in the field, much more convenient than pocketing and extender and having to release the camera, attach the extender then attach the camera again. This is a big time-saver for photography where the subject changes distance frequently or in unpredictable ways.
