5D Mark III vs 5D Mark II from ISO 50 to 25600 (Pipe Organ)
Here are compared the Canon 5D Mark III to its 5D Mark II predecessor at ISO 50 through ISO 25600, whole ISO values.
The lens was the Leica 90mm f/2 APO-Summicron-R ASPH, used with a lens adapter. It is a wonderful lens with superb corner-to-corner sharpness and exceptional color rendition.
Noise and color
This scene has a strongly warm color balance, and therefore offers a good counterpoint to the green-dominant prior comparisons.
Often, the lab evaluation of digital noise fails to take into account the real world, where there can be strongly-hued light and/or rich dark saturated tones, both of which can make noise far more prominent. Studio tests with perfect white balance are a crazy way to test for noise; anyone with studio lighting will certainly use strobes to enable ISO 100 for top quality (barring oddball shooting scenarios). Lighting cannot be controlled for many types of photography (think about a stadium or an event or interior where both tripods and flash are forbidden, etc).
