Canon 5DS R file sizes for RAW, mRAW, sRAW
Canon 5DS R

RAW vs mRAW and sRAW: Camera Cropping and Downsampling and File Size

To produce an mRAW or sRAW image, the camera first crops the 8688 X 5792 image size to 8640 X 5760, which is exactly 4/3 the dimensions of mRAW, and 2X the dimensions of sRAW.

The scaling from full resolution is thus 3:4 and 1:2 to produce the two smaller raw sizes (after the minor crop), and thus the mRAW and sRAW formats are slightly cropped from full frame.

RAW: 8688 X 5792, 50.32 MP ==> 8640 X 5760
mRAW: 6480 X 4320, 27.99 MP
sRAW: 4320 X 2880, 12.40 MP

Observe that the mRAW and sRAW file sizes are highly inefficient if the goal is saving space. These numbers will vary with each particular image (its compressibility)*.

• sRAW is 51% the size of raw, but has only 1/4 as many pixels*!
• mRAW is 75% the size of raw, but has only 56% as many pixels.

Diglloyd DAP is DSLR-oriented, but also contains workflow and other topics. Much of the focus is on Canon and Nikon but also Pentax and Pentax medium format.

Special emphasis is placed on lens evaluation, focusing on Canon and Nikon and Sigma lenses, but with a few others like Rokinon/Samyang.

  • Make better images by learning how to get the best results right away.
  • Save money by choosing the right lens for your needs the first time, particularly some of the new Sigma Art lenses vs Nikon and Canon.
  • Workflow discusses image organization, raw conversion and post processing. Many examples show processing parameters for direct insight into how the image was converted.
  • Jaw-dropping image quality found nowhere else utilizing Retina-grade images up to full camera resolution, plus large crops [past 2 years or so].
  • Real world examples with insights found nowhere else. Make sharper images just by understanding lens behavior you won’t read about elsewhere.
  • Aperture series from wide open through stopped down, showing the full range of lens performance and bokeh.
  • Optical quality analysis of field curvature, focus shift, sharpness, flare, distortion, and performance in the field.
