Canon 5DS R

Monochrome Potential, thoughts vs Leica MM246 (Dolls)

Your author’s experience with the Leica M Monochrom Typ 246 just before receiving the Canon 5DS R leads to a distinct reaction/impression that the Canon 5DS R is superior to the Leica MM in its monochrome potential:

Endless variation vs no baking in

An RGB (color) image offers endless flexibility in mapping colors to tonal relationships and densities for the primaries of red/green/blue as well as cyan/magenta/yellow and any mix thereof.

That post-shot mixing not only cannot be done using a monochrome image, that flexibility does not even exist pre-shot; the choice of filters and their spectral transmission is extremely limited (e.g., blue, green, yellow, red and variations). The MM bakes-in one rendition at the time the image is made (filter or not). Worse, it can be very difficult to pre-visualize how colors will map to grayscale, particularly under unusual lighting. Moreover (your author has done this) hauling around multiple sizes of color filters for different lenses is a huge hassle and can’t be easily done with some lenses. And in terms of visualization, screwing on a after filter to ascertain its effects is a time-consuming hassle.
