A full test of the 800mm would take weeks and involve seeking out wildlife in various forms— very time intensive and not something I could afford to do. At least that’s the way I see many users utilizing this lens.

This pages shows a examples that I feel are instructive about the actual results I was able to obtain under a variety of shooting conditions— good and not so good.

Hits and misses

I had many failures with the 800/5.6L: it’s super easy to blur a shot by movement, or simply by having focus lock-on 6 inches rearward; there is very little depth of field even at f/5.6. I did not feel that the 5D Mark II was really up to the task; this is one lens that deserves the top Canon Pro body, which would also balance the lens better.
