The about $2399 Canon TS-E 17mm f/4L is a highly-corrected tilt and shift lens capable of 6.5° of tilt/swing and 12mm of rise/fall (shift).
Like its TS-E 24/3.5L II sibling, the TS-E 17/4L incorporates an on-the-fly choice of the orientation of tilt mechanism versus the shift mechanism. The lens can thus offer:
- Rise or fall (shift) with swing.
- Rise or fall (shift) with tilt.
- Left/right shift with tilt.
- Left/right shift with swing.
This range of combinations are not available with the TS-E 45/2.8 and TS-E 90/2.8 in their incarnations as of mid-2014. And while the Nikon tilt/shift offering can swap the orientation using tools, the Canon design is unrivalled for practical field use; needing only a 90° rotation by pressing a metal lever on the lens.
