The Canon TS-E 90mm f/2.8 is a tilt and shift lens capable of 8° of tilt/swing and 11mm of rise/fall (shift).
Unlike its newer TS-E 17/4L and TS-E 24/3.5L II siblings, the TS-E 90/2.8 does not incorporate the new design which allows an on-the-fly choice of the tilt mechanism versus the shift mechanism. The lens is thus restricted to
- Rise or fall (shift) with swing.
- Left/right shift with tilt.
In practice, the restricted pairing frequently turns the 90/2.8 into a shift lens OR tilt lens, because the typical need in the field for all around shooting is to use rise or fall (shift) with tilt, a combination not possible with the TS-E 90/2.8. While there are field situations in which the combinations are useful together, the lack of the choice as with the 17/4L and TS-E 24/3.5L is immediately noticed. Product and still-life photography might realize benefits from the default shift/tilt orientation, more so than field work.
