Nikon D810
Nikon AF-S 105mm f/1.4 ED

Examples: 'Oncorhynchus clarki seleniris' aka Paiute Cutthroat Trout in Cottonwood Creek

The Nikon 105mm f/1.4E ED performed brilliantly on the Nikon D810 in both optical and autofocus terms. I used AF-C to track this restless and constantly moving trout. I rate it very highly for accuracy and fast focusing.

I needed a 300mm or 400mm f/2.8, but I had the Nikon 105mm f/1.4E ED, so I made do. These images took 80 minutes of shooting to obtain—and a sore butt and back—I had to remain motionless lest the trout go hide itself. The tricky part is taking the image just as the trout surfaces; below water tends to distort badly.

About the trout

Oncorhynchus clarki seleniris aka Paiute Cutthroat is on the threatened list (formerly endangered). The images that follow were shot at Cottonwood Creek in the White Mountains of California.

  • Jaw-dropping image quality found nowhere else utilizing Retina-grade images up to full camera resolution, plus large crops [past 2 years or so].
  • Real world examples with insights found nowhere else. Make sharper images just by understanding lens behavior you won’t read about elsewhere.
  • Aperture series from wide open through stopped down, showing the full range of lens performance and bokeh.
  • Optical quality analysis of field curvature, focus shift, sharpness, flare, distortion, and performance in the field.
