The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR (about $1397) is a relatively compact super telephoto zoom. On an APS-C camera, its field of view is equivalent to 300-750mm as compared to a full frame camera.
The 200-500/5.6E gets down to a magnification of 0.22x = 1.4.5—not macro, but very close range. It might come in handy, for example, for poisonous snake closeups!
Keeping a super telephoto zoom relatively compact requires a slow lens speed of f/5.6. Zooming, the 500mm setting extends the front half of the lens by about 3.2 inches / 82 mm, making it just about 14 inches / 35 cm long. And yet the lens remains well balanced and manageable (relatively speaking). It can be handheld without undue effort, something that cannot be said of a 500mm f/4 prime lens.
