Nikon D810
Nikon AF-S Nikkor 200mm f/2G ED VR II

Sharpness and Focus Shift at Close Range, Dolls (Nikon D810)

This scene was shot for an initial check of the Nikon 200mm f/2 ED VR II, just to see sharpness and rendering style. It shows sharpness and rendering style at close range, as well as assessing focus shift at close range. See also the explicit test for focus shift at medium distance.

How well the Nikon 200mm f/2G ED VR II holds or does not hold focus with stopping down (focus shift) is assessed here at a shooting distance of about 8 feet / 2 meters.

Lenses can exhibit focus shift that worsens at close range. This scene shows what is likely the worst case, or close to it, with the medium distance scene showing happier results. Still, if one is shooting at close range, it is worth understanding the focus shift behavior at this range; there is no margin for focusing error due to razor thin depth of field.
