Overview and introduction

The 24mm focal length has long been a popular one, but also a “cross over” focal length. Nikon’s new 14-24/2.8 and 24-70/2.8 zooms apply to quite different scenarios, yet the both offer a 24mm setting, and the question is commonly asked which is “better”. That the two lenses are very different in application should be clear, so in some ways the question is a bit silly. Still, the question lingers.

Here we’ll examine the Nikon 14-24/2.8G, the Nikon 24-70/2.8G, the older Nikon 24/2 AI-S and the new PC-E Nikon 24/3.5. All but the 24/2 AI-S are new designs and should offer a very high level of performance, but the 24.4 megapixel Nikon D3x puts severe demands on optics that these lenses are hard-pressed to meet across the frame.
