Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24mm f/1.4G

Ergonomics

This is a large and heavy lens compared to the older Nikon 24mm f/2 AI-S which it dwarfs.

It looks and feels like a quality lens, though it can’t touch the metal build and engraving of the Zeiss ZF.2 line. Still, this is as high a build quality as Nikon offers, and I do prefer a plastic lens hood for cold weather.

The material surrounding the front element is deeply scalloped— unusual. But it looks like it should be very effective at eliminating glare from the frontal area.

I don’t much care for Nikon’s distance scale, which is behind a plastic “window” that invariably gets scratched over time. I much prefer engraved scales, but I never look at them anyway, so the point is a very minor one.

The rear and front elements are exposed, so take special care on both ends!

  • Jaw-dropping image quality found nowhere else utilizing Retina-grade images up to full camera resolution, plus large crops [past 2 years or so].
  • Real world examples with insights found nowhere else. Make sharper images just by understanding lens behavior you won’t read about elsewhere.
  • Aperture series from wide open through stopped down, showing the full range of lens performance and bokeh.
  • Optical quality analysis of field curvature, focus shift, sharpness, flare, distortion, and performance in the field.
