Nikon AF-S 50mm f/1.4G

Vignetting and Brightness

In the course of making an outdoor comparison, I immediately noted a striking difference in both color balance and brightness between the 50/1.8G and the 50/1.4G.

This series comes after seeing such differences on an outdoor scene. I wanted to rule out lighting variation, so I shot a controlled test with multiple lenses, confirming identical behavior with two samples of the 50mm f/1.4G alongside the other 50mm lenses shown here.

Note that the Nikon 50mm f/1.4G is one of the originals, purchased when Nikon first released it. It’s possible that Nikon has silently made changes to the lens coatings since then.

These images taken with the 12MP Nikon D3s at ISO 200 using natural lighting.

JPEGs saves at 100% quality, as good as possible. Click any image view the entire series.
