Nikon AF-S Nikkor 58mm f/1.4G

Close Range Comparison vs NOCT-Nikkor (D800E, Bathroom)

This comparison evaluates close-range performance against the 58mm f/1.2 NOCT-Nikkor. Assessment of sharpness and contrast but also focus shift and bokeh is possible here.

Some years ago (a decade or so), I owned a NOCT-Nikkor, having purchased four (4) of them used and cherry-picked the best. I never did feel satisfied with its imaging performance, but at that time the disappointing results were simply baffling. The analysis here explains that confusion by showing the strong focus shift of not only the NOCT Nikkor, but its new 58/1.4G sibling.

Reproduction ratio

Reproduction ratio here is ~ 1:8.1, about the size of a tight portrait head shot. Image plane to subject distance was ~26 inches (66 cm), which is very close to the 58cm close-focus limit of the 58/1.4G where reproduction ratio is at its maximum of 1:7.7.
