On this page are compared the Nikon 60mm f/2.8G ED against the Coastal Optics 60mm f/4 UV-VIS-IR APO macro in terms of working distance and color correction.

Both lenses were shot without moving the camera, which was locked into place on a tripod.

Focal length shortening

Observe that the Nikon AF-S 60mm f/2.8G ED shows a notably wider field of view at this close range than the Coastal 60/4, the opposite of the finding near infinity focus.

The wider field of view is almost certainly the result of the focal-length shortening tricks used to focus to 1:1. This focal length “breathing” is intolerable to video users, but for still photographers it raises a practical issues: the wider angle of view means a correspondingly closer working distance needed to obtain the same magnification. This can make it more difficult to light the subject, especially at 1:1.
