The Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G VR II really cannot deliver enough resolution for the 36-megapixel Nikon D800, at least not over its zoom range and away from the center. Other field shots confirm that while central sharpness can be excellent at most focal lengths, off-center sharpness is not so good.
With one caveat: perhaps there is a perfect 70-200 VR II out there with perfect optical alignment at all focal lengths, and maybe such a magical beast actually exists and would perform substantially better. I have my doubts, since my test lens is a replacement for the first copy, which was far worse, as documented in my review.
