Update: a 2nd sample of the D850 did not show this kind of awful alignment issue, but it did show the same flange focal distance error making lenses focus well beyond the infinity mark.
This page shows examples of what a misaligned sensor can do to images. With a high resolution digital sensor, the sensor and the lens mount flange must be perfectly parallel, or the image will be “swung” or “tilted” or both, using that view camera terminology.
